Itanagar, May 26: A Border Roads Organisation (BRO) employee met a tragic end while trying to save six lives during a landslide along the Ziro-Kimin road under Lower Subansiri district last evening.

His body was sent to his native place in Kerala for the last rites today, BRO officials here said.

Sree Kumar R, a junior engineer superintending building roads grade-II of 432 RMPL under 119 Road Construction Company of 756 BRTF, was supervising the cleaning of massive blockade at 40 km point to make clear the traffic.

BRO sources said Mr Kumar was alerted by the roaring noise of huge boulders crushing down the hill and swung into action without caring for his safety and succeeded in saving at least six BRO personnel and labourers, but was himself crushed under a heavy boulder.

He was rushed to North Lakhimpur hospital in a serious condition and brought back to R K Mission Hospital in the evening where he succumbed to his injuries, 756 BRTF commander U K Pandey informed.

''He sacrificed his life for the cause of the nation true to BRO's motto- Sramena sarbam sadhyam (hard work brings success). We are proud of him and would recommend due recognition to his selfless sacrifice'', Mr Pande added.

He was 40 and is survived by his wife, a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.
