Bomb attack on police officer,100 arrested during civic poll

Patna, May 26 (UNI) Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Singh and his bodyguard survived an attempt on their lives at Hajipur in Bihar's Vaishali district when miscreants triggered a powerful bomb explosion during the municipal polls today.

Altogether eight people including RJD leader Shahid Jamal were arrested in connection with the blast.

"Mr Jamal was trying to influence the polling in favour of his brother Mohammad Shabir, who is contesting the poll," police said.

Meanwhile, state police headquarters sources said more than 100 people were taken into police custody on charges of disturbing the poll process.

Police said one Santosh Kumar Rajak was arrested in Munger district when he was caught carrying two live bombs and some explosives. Altogether 20 people including a candidate were arrested on charge of creating disturbances during the polling.

In Nawada district, police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the rival groups who had clashed following the detection of a forged Photo Identity Card from the possession of a voter, who was in the queue to cast his vote at Moglakhar village.

Police informed that six people including two policemen were injured in Bhagalpur when two rival groups clashed following dispute over the alleged bogus voting at booth No.42. Police lathicharged to scare away the rival groups and have arrested 38 people.

In Dehri-on-Sone, two candidates and a RJD leader were taken into police custody at separate places, on charges of influencing the polling.
