Chennai, May 25: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi declared that he would fight for setting up of a Parliamentary Committee for welfare of Backward Classes (BCs).

Addressing a social justice conference here, he said only a Parliamentary Committee would protect the interests of the BCs in the coming years.

He said besides writing to the Centre in this regard, he would convene an all party meeting to elicit the views of all political parties and prevail upon the Centre to constitute a Parliamentary Committee for the welfare of BCs.

Referring to recent setback the 27 per cent OBC reservation in higher education institutions suffered, he said though we would be able to get justice through the court, a Parliamentary Committee would alone protect the oppressed class.

A Parliamentary Committee for BCs was necessary to fight the dangers they would face in the future, he added.
