Three wounded in police-timber smugglers clash in Kashmir
Srinagar, May 25 (UNI) At least three people were wounded in a clash between police and timber smugglers in south Kashmir today.
A police party from Lassipora intercepted a big group of timber smugglers at Gujjar Basti near SIDCO complex in Pulwama district.
The group, headed by notorious smuggler, Nazir Ahmed Wani alias Nazir Balpore, was smuggling illicit timber on horses.
When stopped, the timber smugglers attacked the police personnel with axes and sticks. They also tried to snatch rifles from two police personnel, identified as head constables Fayaz Ahmed and Ghulam Hassan.
The two policemen were wounded while trying to prevent the smugglers from snatching their service weapons.
In the scuffle, Wani received bullet injury. He has been admitted to the Sri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital here.
Police have registered a case and launched investigations.
