Mother kills daughter, commits suicide

Kendrapada, May 25 (UNI) Family dispute forced a 25-year-old mother to kill her three-year-old daughter and later commit suicide.

Police said Sabita Swain, (25), alias Chhabi, a resident of Sukarpada village, married to Ajay Samal, killed her daughter by smothering the child with a pillow and later committed suicide by hanging herself in the house following a family dispute.

The incident took place in Bhanagara village near Chandol under Kendrapara police limit on Thursday last, Kendrapara police station Inspector incharge Shantanu Dash said.

Police suspected that an altercation between the husband and the wife over dowry demands led to the tragic incident.

The parent of the deceased lodged an FIR today in the Kendrapara police station alleging that their daughter was killed as they failed to fulfill the dowry demand of a colour TV and a cash of Rs 50,000, by her in-laws.

Police have seized the dowry items in presence of a Magistrate and detained Sabita's mother-in-law and brother-in law. However, Sabita's husband and some other members of the family were absconding.
