Karunakaran chooses not to justify purification ceremony

Thiruvananthapuram, May 25 (UNI) Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader K Karunakaran today said he did not justify the purification ceremony at the famed Sree Krishna temple at Guruvayoor, days after Union Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and his family visited the temple.

Talking to mediapersons here, he said it was a painful incident and it should not have happened as the offering was performed for a six-month-old boy.

However, Mr Karunakaran maintained that he was not criticising the action of the Tantri, as he was the ultimate person to take decisions on temple activities. The Tantris were following century-old traditions practised in temples and it should not be questioned.

''My opinion is that all those who belived in Hinduism and followed the Hindu traditions should be allowed to visit temples,'' he said.

The Guruvayoor Temple authorities had performed a purification ceremony, days after Mr Ravi and his family visited the temple in connection with a ceremony of their grandson.
