Kurukshetra, May 25 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today expressed concern over the poor quality of life of the people not only in rural areas but even in urban areas, despite high growth rate.

''It is evident that the economic growth is not fully reflected in the quality of life of large number of people, particularly in the rural areas and even in urban areas, Dr Kalam said while delivering the convocation address in Kurukshetra University here today.

He said the National Prosperity Index must be measured not only in terms of the annual growth rate of GDP but it should be linked with the improvement of quality of life of people both in villages and towns and adoption of value system in every walk of life.

''Improvement in the GDP is no doubt an important factor for the prosperity, though it is not the only factor. Progressive reduction in the number of people living below poverty line leading to near zero by 2017, increase in quality of life of all citizens in terms of food, shelter, water, energy, infrastructure, education and health will be major indicators of the growth,'' he said.

Besides, efficient and transparent system of governance, peace in families and communities, reduction in corruption index, court cases, violence against children and women and in communal tension would also decide the growth of the nation, he added.
