Initiate action against sadhus making mockery of faith: Karat

New Delhi, May 25 (UNI) CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat today urged Finance Minister P Chidambaram to initiate an inquiry against the so-called ''sadhus and Godmen'' who admitted to accepting commission for converting black money into white.

Ms Karat, in a letter, said these gentlemen ran trusts and charitable foundations which were used for ''nefarious and illegal activities''.

''They have misused their powers and made a mockery of the faith of those who have become their devotees. They have made crores of rupees by helping people evade tax. But equally important, the routes they have provided for converting black money into white can as easily be used by terrorist organisations and anti-national elements to fund their activities,'' she noted.

The letter pointed out that the programme was part of a sting operation carried out by a private TV channel and telecast on May 6.
