Hot weather prevails in Punjab, Haryana

Chandigarh, May 25 (UNI) Hot weather prevailed in the plains even as the temperatures dipped at some places in the Northwest region today.

The tempertures, after soaring yesterday, hovered one degree above normal in Punjab and Haryana.

Hisar, where mercury touched 43.4 degrees Celsius yesterday, recorded a fall in the temperature settling at 41.8 degrees Celsius.

However, the town turned out to be the hottest place in Haryana.

Ambala recorded a temperature of 40.6 degrees while Karnal recorded 40.5 degrees, one degree above normal.

In Punjab, the maximum temperature plummeted at Amritsar following rain, providing respite to people from sweltering heat.

The holy city recorded 39.0 degrees Celsius and measured two mm rain. Ludhiana recorded a temperature of 40.0 degrees, one degree below normal with trace rainfall, which brought slight fall in the mercury, While Patiala showed 41.6 degrees, one degree above normal.

A duststorm swept Chandigarh and its adjoining areas in Punjab and Haryana during the day. However, the mercury kept its upward movement in the city, which recorded 40.4 degrees, one degree above normal.

Parts of Himachal Pradesh also experienced a fall in the soaring temperatures. Bhuntar in Kullu district recorded 26.4 degrees while Sundernagar in Mandi district registered 31.9 degrees and Kalpa in Kinnaur district showed 19.9 degrees Celsius.

The mercury also fell in the capital town of Shimla following rains, recording 25.0 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal.

The Met office has predicted light to moderate rains or thundershowers at many places in Himachal Pradesh and few places in Punjab and, duststorm or thunderstorm with light to moderate rains at few places in Haryana during the next 24 hours.

It also predicted hailstorm or thundersquall with speed exceeding 45 km per hour at isolated places in the region.
