Globalisation hitting shandies hard: Council Chairman

Mysore, May 25 (UNI) Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Prof B K Chandrashekar today remarked that impact of globalisation was coming in the way of development of village based shandies.

Speaking after releasing a book 'Agriculture Marketing Development -- Wanted a Marketing Revolution here', he said globalisation which had led to the entry of big companies in the retail sector had hit the village market places hard and would eventually lead to extinction of shandies.

He pointed out that shandies were culturally and economically closely related and a contributor to the GDP. The State and Central government were planning to bring a legislation over agricultural marketing. "I hope such measures will help the farmers and revival of shandies," he added.

Prof J Shashidar, Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore attributed the raise in farmers suicide cases to shandies facing extinction. Shandies had proved profitable for the farmers in selling their produce directly to the consumer without the interference of middlemen, he felt.
