Bhubaneswar, May 25 (UNI) Wonder boy Budhia Singh's mother today came down heavily on Child Welfare Committee(CWC) observation on her son's participation in the 500 kms marathon walking event, dubbing its action as ''unwarranted, uncalled for and without any legal basis.'' Deposing before the Chairman and members of the Khurda District CWC in response to a showcause notice, Sukanti Singh said Budhia, her son, was not a child in need of care and protection within the meaning of section2(d) of the Juvenile Justice (care and Protection) Act.

The CWC had issued a showcause to the Budhia Singh Trust (BST) for organising the marathon walking event from Bhubaneswar to Kolkata covering a distance of 500 kms in eleven days.

The CWC opined that the proposed action of engaging or using Budhia Singh in the marathon walking event would be an act of subjecting the child to 'unnecessary suffering and cruelty'.

Being a Trustee and authorised representative of the BST, Budhia's mother Sukanti Singh said her son would be only gracing and honouring the occasion by his esteemed presence.

The Marathon walking, she further said, would be organised for two hours daily, one hour in the morning and another hour in the evening. Besides, it was also intended to raise funds in the form of sponsorship for meeting the growing need of the wonder child in terms of food, shelter, nutrition, physician, trainers, assistant and training equipment.

She further said the Trust had requested the parents of Budhia Singh to allow him to honour the occasion by his presence and they have agreed to the proposal with the condition that the child would only participate in the marathon walking event as an honorary status and not as an active participant.
