Kolkata, May 26 (UNI) Students from the minority communities will now be provided financial assistance for pursuing higher studies following the Centre's proposed scheme of merit-cum-means based scholarship.

The Centre unveiled a scheme of 20,000 merit-cum-means based scholarships for students from minority communities that would be awarded every year to enable them to go for higher studies, Finance Minister P Chidambaram announced in his budget speech, 2006-07.

As per the provisions of the scheme, financial assistance would be provided to students aspiring to pursue professional and technical courses at graduate and post-graduate levels in a recognised institution, the annual report (2006-07) of the Ministry of Minority Affairs stated.

The scheme was aimed to encourage professional and technical education and thereby increase the number of professionals and technocrats from the minority communities and enhance their employability in the job market.

The special report stated that the scheme, recommended by the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC), would be implemented through the state governments and union territories. An approval of the competent authority was awaited in this regard.
