Two villagers gunned down by Maoist guerillas

Patna, May 24 (UNI) Two people were shot dead and as many seriously injured by suspected Maoist guerillas at Maniarpur village in East Champaran district bordering Nepal early today.

East Champaran district Superintendent of Police told UNI over telephone that the incident took place when a group of about 20 Maoists, armed with lethal weapons, raided the remote village about 150 km from here at around 03-30 hours and shot dead two villagers.

They suspected Nandu Singh and Laxmi Narayan Singh of being police informers.

Two others suffered bullet injuries in the attack. The guerillas escaped under the cover of darkness.

''A large police force rushed to the spot and started a combing operation,'' the SP said.

The injured, he said, were admitted to the district medical college and hospital where their condition was stated to critical.

Incidentally, this was the second such attack by suspected Maoists in Bihar this month. Earlier, a school teached was killed on the charge of being a police informer. The assailants had also left behind a hand-written note.
