MP has highest number of tigers in central India
Bhopal, May 24 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh is the state with the highest tiger population in central India, according to preliminary statistics of a study -- being conducted by the Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India -- on the number of tigers in the region and their habitat.
Tigers are found over 15,614 sq km in this state while comparative figures are Orissa 9,144 sq km, Andhra Pradesh 8,141 sq km, Maharashtra 4,273 sq km, Chhattisgarh 3,609 sq km and Rajasthan 356 sq km. Statistical estimates were made on Madhya Pradesh's national parks and sanctuaries, an official release said here today.
In the second phase, study results of forest divisions outside protected areas would be obtained. The number of tigers in the parks and sanctuaries is estimated at 340. Cubs below 18 months were not included. More than 50 cubs are present in tiger reserves.
