Japan firms keen to share ship building technology with India

Mangalore, May 24 (UNI) Japan companies, which are market leaders in ship building, are eager to share the technology with India, Japan External Trade Organisation (JETO) Director General Kazumasa Kuboki said today.

Speaking at an interactive meeting on 'Business Opportunities Between Japan and India', organised by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here, he said Mangalore had good port facility and companies here could explore the possibilities of utilising the Japanese ship building technology for ship building activities.

He said Japan was the fifth largest investor in India and its flow of direct investment to India from August 1991 to November 2006 stood at 2,175 million US Dollars. As many as 450 Japanese companies were operating in India, of which 77 were in Karnataka alone, he added.

Earlier, KCCI President John Prasad Menezes, who submitted a memorandum to Mr Kuboki, said both Japan and India in general and Mangalore in particular could explore the possibilities of sharing and using Japanese expertise as Japan was the market leader in ship building, electronics, fishing and technology innovation, while Mangalore was known for its knowledge industries.
