Japan eyes sharing ship building tech with India

Mangalore, May 24: The Japan companies, which are market leaders in ship building, are eager to share the technology with India, Japan External Trade Organisation (JETO) Director General Kazumasa Kuboki said today.

Speaking at an interactive meeting on "Business opportunities between Japan and India", organised by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here, he said that Mangalore had good port and companies here could explore the possibilities of utilizing the Japanese ship building technology for ship building activities.

He said that Japan was the Fifth largest investor in India and its flow of direct investment to India from August 1991 to November 2006 stood at 2175 million US Dollars. 450 Japanese companies were operating in India of which 77 were in Karnataka alone, he added.

Earlier, KCCI President John Prasad Menezes who submitted a memorandum to Mr Kuboki said that both Japan and India in general and Mangalore in particular could explore the possibilities of sharing and utilizing the Japanese expertise including in ship building as Japan was market leader in ship building, electronics, fishing and technology innovation while Mangalore which had several educational and medical institutions was known for knowledge industries.
