Cops seeks non-bailable warrant against Orissa DG

Jaipur, May 23: Rajasthan Police today sought issuance of a non-bailable arrest warrant for Orissa's Director General (Home Guards) Bidhya Bhusan Mohanty, who had given a surety for the parole of son Bitti Mohanty, convicted of raping a German tourist.

The police officer has been charged with concealing facts and harbouring and obstructing the arrest of his son, who has been absconding after he was released from Jaipur jail on parole.

During the hearing in the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (No 2), the state police sought the warrant to compel the presence of DG Mohanty, who was expected to appear before the investigating officers or the court in Jaipur on Monday on the expiry of the six week relief granted ro him by the Supreme Court on April 19.

DG Mohanty is wanted by the Jaipur East police in connection with the disapperance of his son who was convicted for rape of a German tourist at Alwar in March last year.

Bitti Mohanty was serving a seven year jail term at the Central Jail here when he was released on a 15 day parole on the surety of his father to meet his ailing mother in November last. The convict has to return to jail on December 4 but he is absconding. While his family insists that it is ignorant about his whereabouts, the Rajasthan police has charged the Orissa DG with harbouring and protecting his son.
