Police officer injured, militant among 2 killed in J

Srinagar, May 23 (UNI) A senior officer of the Jammu and Kashmir police and his driver were injured while a militant and a civilian were killed in the state overnight.

Security forces arrested a militant, busted four hideouts while one ultra surrendered in the state during the period.

An official spokesman said here militants attacked Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of police station Mendhar, Yougal Manhas, near Shaheedan chowk when he was on way to his office in a vehicle today.

Mr Manhas and his driver Mohammad Zahoor were injured in the attack. They were later airlifted to Jammu for treatment.

The Al-Mansoorian militant outfit has claimed the responsibility for the attack.

A person, identifying himself as outfit spokesman Amir Mir, called up offices of several local media organisations here to claim the responsibility for the attack.

''Cadres from our outfit carried out the attack on the Mendhar police station this morning,'' he said.

Spokesman said an encounter took place at Malhoora in south Kashmir in which one militant and a civilian Farooq Ahmad Koka were killed. One AK rifle and other arms and ammunition were recovered near the site of encounter.

He said one militant surrendered alongwith two AK rifles, 11 magzines, 60 rounds of ammunition, one grenade, four grenade throwers and two wireless set.

A militant was arrested alongwith two grenades, two Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), five geltine rods, one RPG shell and one muzzle loading gun at Dhobipura in Kishtwar district of Jammu regiion.

Security forces busted four hideouts and recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition, including four wireless sets, two AK rifles, three hand grenades, two UBGL grenades, five magzines and about 200 rounds of ammunition.
