New Housing Policy for Urban Dwellers with in two months

Bangalore, May 23 (UNI) The Union Government will come out with a new Urban Housing Policy, within two month, to address the increasing twin challenges of providing shelter to all at affordable cost and to improve the Standard of living of the urban poor, Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Secretary Dr H S Anand said today.

Delivering key-note address at the International Workshop on 'Emerging Trends in Cost-effective Housing Technologies' jointly organised by the Union Urban Ministry, Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council and United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), here he said that more than 24 million people living in urban areas were facing housing shortage at the end of 10th plan and adding another 1.3 million every year.

Stating that providing shelter to all living in urban areas as a phenomenal challenge, Dr Anand said that there is a need to develop eco-friendly habitat, promotion of low cost building materials and promoting sustainable livelihoods to meet the challenge.

He said that the main problems faced by the developing countries are creating sustainable livelihoods and preserving the environment.

There are also severe problems of agro-industrial wastes and their management through its proper utilization.
