Kolkata can be promoted as heritage tourism site: Stuttard

Kolkata, May 23(UNI) The city of Kolkata, dotted with heritage buildings and its chequered history, is likely to be promoted as the centre of heritage tourism with the help of the London Corporation, Mayor of London John Stuttard said.

Speaking to mediapersons here today, Mr Stuttard said the city has a number of heritage bulidings and it could be developed as a heritage tourism hub.

'' Kolkata has a lot of business proposals and we are interested to enter into colloborative efforts with Bengal, he said.

''I have met Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee this morning and have given this proposal to him,' he said.

The Mayor today visited Kolkata with a 33-member delegation. In the last leg of the visit in Kolkata, apart from the Chief Minister, the team also met Kolkata Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya and visited Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The delegation also visited Mumbai.

Speaking on the occasion, the British High Commissioner said that he was pleased to see an increase in UK interest in the eastern region.

In the last few months several trade delegations have come from the UK covering key sectors like healthcare, infrastructure, urban regeneration and materials handling.
