Congress Councillor, husband arrested for taking 'protection money'
New Delhi, May 23 (UNI) In a fresh blow to the Congress, still licking its wounds from the recent defeat at the MCD hustings, one of its Councillors and her husband were arrested today by the CBI on bribery charges.
Veena Saini, MCD Councillor from Nangloi (East), and her husband Naresh Saini were arrested this evening while accepting Rs 25,000 as 'protection money' from a Nangloi resident, said the CBI.
The complainant had made a written complaint that both the MCD Councillor and her husband were demanding Rs 50,000 from him as 'Protection Money', failing which he would be harrassed by MCD officials in connection with the construction of his house and in the use of the sewerage connection.
While the husband of the Councillor was arrested accepting Rs 25,000 at his Laxmi Park office in Nangloi, the Councillor was taken into custody from her residence at Saini Mohalla in Nangloi.
Searches was being conducted at their offices and residence and they were being interrogated, the CBI added.
