Mumbai, May 21 (UNI) The Western Railway (WR) today said it has initiated a slew of measures to facilitate a smooth train service for Mumbaikars during the monsoon, urging the commuters not to throw anything on railway tracks, which may lead to water-logging and choking of drains.

The Railway has also decided to deploy senior officials at the critical locations. The control room will be manned by officers during the rains, a WR release said today.

The authorities have also claimed that all the 43 culverts, which falls under the WR jurisdiction have been cleaned up at a total cost of Rs 55 lakh and joint inspection with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been completed well before the rains hit the city shores.

Taking a lesson from the unprecedented rains in July 2005 which had resulted in flooding of the tracks, 85 km of track between Mumbai Central and Borivli has been raised by 100-125 mm, using the track machine. Also, while 30 km of kachcha has been constructed from grant road to Borivli at different places across the Western line, another 13 km of concrete drain work is under construction, which will ensure quick dispersal of storm water, the official release claimed.

As part of its monsoon preparations, the WR has also removed 60,000 bags of muck during the cleaning operation and the task of cleaning the 25 km drains, at a cost of Rs 13.30 lakh, is likely to be completed before May 25, the release added.

In addition, the Railway also plans to install 32 pumps of 600 HP at a cost of Rs 29 lakh at critical locations like Dadar, Matunga Jn, Mahim, Bandra, Andheri and Borivli stations to pump out the water in a short time in case of water-logging.
