Rs 5 Cr Nilnag-Hafroo Water Supply Scheme approved in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 21 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir government has approved Rs 5.44 crore Nilnag-Hafroo Regional Water Supply Scheme (RWSS) while five other schemes are expected to be completed during the current financial year in central Kashmir.

The RWSS also envisages construction of a 2.5 lakh gallon capacity water treatment plan to provide hygienic potable drinking water to villages in the area.

This was announced by Minister for Public Health Engineering, Irrigation and Flood Control, Mohammad Dilawar Mir at Nilnag to mark the start of the prestigious Rs 6 crore Nilnag lake renovation cum beautification project at the historic lake site yesterday.

The renovation of the Nilnag lake has been conceived by the Union Ministry of Water Resources.

Mr Dilawar Mir said the Nilnag-Hafroo Regional Water Supply Scheme is being executed under Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme and would benefit inhabitants of backward areas like Nilnag, Goggipathri, Kotabal, Jaden, Hafroo, Kach Dub and Chowdhry Gund in Tehsil Chadoora.

The Minister said five more drinking water supply schemes in Tehsil Chadoora, including Nagoo Brenwar, Brinjan Buzgoo, Watkaloo Loolipora, Branpathri Baldora and Shumnag-Doda Ompora are expected to be completed during the current financial year at a cumulative cost of Rs 7.14 crores and would benefit the population of 49 villages.

The Minister said three new water supply schemes including W S Schemes at Namtahal, Chaki Surasyar and Yarikalan have been approved under ARWSP envisaging to provide potable drinking water in the area.

These schemes would involve an expenditure of Rs 1.74 crore, the Minister added.

He said Water Supply Scheme Sogam and Water Supply Scheme for Dangerpora, Rather Mohalla have also been approved under Sawajal Dhara Scheme to augment drinking water supply in these areas of Tehsil Chadoora.

The Minister said renovation of Nilnag lake would bring socio-economic transformation in the backward Kandi belt of Tehsil Chadoora as it would increase irrigation facility, boost fish production and promote tourism activities in the area.
