Pachauri studying green technologies for different sectors: Sibal
Panaji, May 21 (UNI) Concerned over alarming developments following global changes in the world due to environmental degradation, the Centre has commissioned a study to develop a roadmap for use of clean and green technologies in different sectors in the country.
Informing this to mediapersons here today, Union minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal said noted scientist R K Pachauri, attached to the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI), New Delhi, has been entrusted with the study to come out with concrete results at the earliest.
Mr Sibal said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had recently convened a meeting with the people concerned including officials of the S&T ministry to study implications of global and regional dimensions of global changes.
India emits greenhouse gasses to the tune of four per cent of the USA, eight per cent of the UK and ten per cent of Japan and the developed countries are now committed to reduce the emission levels below 5.2 per cent level with 1990 base year by the year 2012, India should switch over to clean environment mechanisms in a big way using mixed fuels like ethanol and petrol, liquid coal, coal ash for bricks by evolving a policy framework.
Even use of biodegradable clothes in place of synthetic material would alo reduce emission of green house gasses, he said.
Now that the Antarctic Tready Countries Meeting had recently given the green signal, India would soon workout modalities for setting up the third Antarctic Research Base station at Larsemann Bay, 600 nautical miles east of the existing Maitri station in the icy continent, he said.
The work on launching expedition to the Southern Ocean and the Arctic besides acquiring the ice-class vesssl for the expeditions without depending on foreign vessels, would also get underway soon, he said.
The proposed Tsunami warning system would also be in place by September 2007 as envisaged, he added.
