Vijayawada, May 21: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) declared that the ongoing Bhoo Poratam (land struggle), seeking possession of government lands for housing to the poor, would continue at any cost in Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking at a public meeting here, party polit bureau member Sitaram Yechuri said the police had arrested 1,000 activists and leaders since the agitation was started and there was 100 non-bailable warrants against them.

Lashing out the state government for arresting the leaders, he said the land struggle started by the party would further strengthen them to achieve their goal.

Mr Yechury said after the collapse of USSR, every one thought CPM was written off, but the party came in a position to control national politics.

Pointing out that the people had given a mandate in 2004 that without the support of left parties, no government could run on its own at the Centre, he said, he said that to keep the communal forces at bay and to strengthen the secular forces in the country, the left parties were giving outside support to the UPA.

Mr Yechury said the UPA should implement the promises made to the people prior to the elections. Due to the left parties pressure, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced that the public sector undertakings which were running in profits would not be privatised, he noted. Commenting on agricultural sector, Mr Yechury claimed that every year about 20,000 peasants were committing suicide. Even though the Prime Minister had announced a special package for Vidarbha, the suicides spree was not contained, he observed.

Mr Yechury said UPA could be coerced to abide by the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) only by applying pressure from above and below. The pressure being applied by left parties from above in the Parliament and this pressure should be strengthened by people's pressure from below, he added.

On SEZs, he said the factories should be set up on barren lands and not on agricultural lands. The existing law of 1894, constituted during the British rule, for land acquisition would not suit the present day needs and a new law should be brought in by inserting a clause for providing partnership for the land owner in the factory or industry.
