Centre to consider imposing mandatory mechanisation to contractors

Bangalore, May 21 (UNI) Centre is considering a proposal to make mandatory to introduce mechanisation with regard to construction of buildings to maintain quality and speed to complete projects.

Revealing this to newsmen here Central Public Works Department Director General (Works) A Chakrabarti said the move was also aimed helping contractors to ensure optimum work at a lesser period with improvement in quality. This was very much needed keeping in view the changing trends in the construction sector across the country, he felt.

Replying to queries, after attending an inter-departmental conference to discuss policy and co-ordination issues with CPWD clients, he said CPWD had expertise in various key sectors such as health, Education, Tourism and Sports. The centre had also decided to upgradate various hospitals across the country on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the CPWD had been entrusted with the work to take up the task to give good ambiance and aesthetic sense to the hospital environment.

He said CPWD was also ready to execute works for the Karnataka Government if they evinced keen interest in assigning them works.

" I have state-of-the-art expertise but I cannot publicise as I am not a private enterprise. It is for the local government to make use of our expertise," he added.

South Zone Chief Engineer S Chinnaswamy, who was also present, said on an average CPWD took Rs 100 crore worth works each in Karnataka and Kerala.
