45 Tripura Panchayats awarded for hygienic practices

Agartala, May 20 (UNI) The Nirmal Gram Puraskar, 2007, was awarded to 45 Panchayats of three districts in Tripura for maintaining sanitary conditions along with 739 other awardees in the country.

The administration had ensured the use of toilets, maintained prescribed norms of waste disposal methods and cleaned all the habitations, which finally showed a qualitative improvement in the villages.

State Rural Development Minister Jitendra Choudhury said the awarded Panchayats were already clamouring for assistance to build toilets.

Mr Choudhury said the Panchayats had employed self-help groups for cleaning the streets while the Total Sanitation Campaign had motivated the villagers to bring about a behavioural change, the minister added.
