Farmer attempts suicide in front of Tahsildar's office
Gulbarga, May 19 (UNI) Timely intervention by Government authorities in Basava Kalyan in Bidar District of Karnataka saved a sugarcane farmer, who set himself ablaze in front of the Tahsildar's office as a local co-operative sugar mill failed to lift his crop for crushing.
The 35-year-old farmer Basavaraj Kamshetty, who met the Tahsildar D Y Patil and got an assurance that steps would be taken to lift the sugarcane he had grown, attempted self immolation in front of the Tahsildar's office yesterday, as he was not satisfied with the assurance.
Mr Patil and other officials immediately doused the fire and saved the farmer.
Kamshetty, who suffered 50 per cent burns was being treated at the Government Hospital here.
Officials said this was the 35th reported suicide attempt in Bidar district and the first in Basava Kalyan Taluk.
