Dalit woman beaten to death in Gaya

Gaya, May 19 (UNI) An elderly woman was beaten to death by a former village head (Mukhiya) and his supporters at Dhansheel village in the district today generating a wave of protest.

District Superintendent of Police A K Jain said here that Kari Devi, belonging to a lower caste, and former mukhiya Saroj Singh had a longstanding feud over the possession of a piece of land.The issue reached a flashpoint when Singh, along with some of his supporters, raided her home and assaulted her. Though admitted to a nearby hospital, Kari Devi succumbed to her injuries.

Enraged, a mob went on rampage and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.They also demanded compensation to the next of kin of the deceased.

The matter was being investigated by the police and raids were on to nab the culprits.

Incidentally, another lower caste woman was mercilessly beaten up by a person at Biharshariff in Nalanda district about a fortnight ago. The incident had generated public outcry and forced the police to arrest the culprit.
