Ahmedabad, May 19 (UNI) The All India Christian Council (AICC) today urged the Gujarat Government to protect the Roman Catholic graveyard here as directed by the High Court.

AICC joint secretary Samson Christian expressed anxiety that the coming rains could destroy the graveyard if timely action was not initiated by the government.

He alleged that some people, in connivance with government officials and police, have been digging up the surrounding areas of the graveyard for sand.

The AICC had filed a special civil application before the Gujarat High Court pleading for the graveyard's protection.

Following this, the High Court passed an order on May 10 and directed the district collector to prevent the illegal excavation work. But, the collector has not acted on the orders yet, Mr Christian alleged.

He said that two acres of land had been allotted to the Roman Catholic community in 1998 by the district collector for the graveyard.
