VPRES to mobilise public support

Mumbai, May 18 (UNI) Amidst lurking fear of their slums being demolished by the Mumbai Metropolitan Regulatory Development Authority (MMRDA) for modernisation of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport here, the Vimantal Parisar Rahiwasi Ekta Sangh (VPRES) has called for a meeting tomorrow.

''We fear that the Maharshtra government and the airport management together are planning a joint demolition drive in the airport area before the onset of the monsoon. So, to appraise the current situation to the democratic and humanitarian-minded people of Mumbai and to decide the future course of action through discussion, we have organised this meeting tomorrow,'' a Sangh statement said.

The Sangh comprises slum dwellers from Samrat Ashok Nagar, Shree Sambhaji Nagar, Rajaramwadi, Ambewadi and Sanjay Gandhi Nagar. All these localities are in proximity to the airport, and as per airport modernisation plans they are to be relocated at other places.
