Agartala, May 18: The opposition Congress in Tripura today demanded a CBI inquiry into the alleged rape of seven tribal women at Dalakcherra area in South Tripura district on May 12.

Talking to newspersons here, senior Congress leader Ratan Lal Nath alleged that the police investigation was hampered due to political interference of the ruling Left Front in the state.

'' We demand CBI intervention to unearth the truth, as the ruling party supporters may have direct link in the incident,'' Mr Nath said adding that the role of the State Women's Commission was also not satisfactory.

He also said altogether 21 rape and 82 cases of atrocities against women had been reported during this month in the state, placing it at the top of the list of crimes against women in the country.

Referring to the National Crime Record Bureau, Mr Nath stated that the crime rate was much higher in the state as compared to the conviction rate.

He also alleged that the attrocities against women had increased ever since the fourth Left Front government led by Manik Sarkar have assumed the office.
