Somnath keen on bilateral ties with Tanzania

New Delhi, May 18 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today today said that India was keen to have bilateral and multi-lateral ties with Tanzania, with which had a close affinity.

Welcoming Tanzanian Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Dr (Ms) Batilda S Burian who called him at his residence this evening, Mr Chatterjee said Parliamentary system and democracy in India was the people's greatest possession and the country wished to share its experience with other countries, particularly developing ones. India had multi-party democracy at work with several parties working together for development and national issues, he added.

To a query about the Lok Sabha television channel, the Speaker said it was the first channel in the world to be run by the Parliament and helped the institution to reach out to the masses and keep them informed about the happenings in the country's apex democratic forum. "My dream is to establish closest contact between the people and Parliament", he remarked.

The Speaker extended his invitation to Tanzanian Speaker to lead a Parliamentary delgation to India and briefed the visitors about the functioning of bicameral Parliament, Standing Committees, Bureau of Parliamentary Studies, Training and Parliamentary Museum.

On her part, Dr Burian said that her government was contemplating about facilitating funds for MPs in her country for development of their respective constitutencies.
