Eleven killed, 44 injured as bus rolled down in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 18 (UNI) At least eleven people were killed and 44 injured, many of them critically, when an overloaded bus carrying them fell into a deep gorge in Meghalaya's Mawkajem village, about 35 km from here today.

Police said the toll might rise as many of the injured were in a critical condition, while many were still trapped inside the bus, which was en route to Tynriang near the Indo-Bangla border from Laitlyngkot village in East Khasi Hills district.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range) A S Rynjah told UNI over the phone from Mawkajem that 11 people, mostly women, were killed and several others critically injured.

The said all the injured had been admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital and at Pynursla Community Health Centre.

'' The toll might rise as several of the passengers were critically injured, while many more are still trapped inside the bus, '' Mr Rynjah said adding the rescue operation were on.

The cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained, the DIG, camping at the accident site, said.

He, however, said preliminary reports suggested that the accident occurred due to a head-collision of the bus with a small vehicle.
