Shillong, May 18 (UNI) Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma today stressed on the need to empower people through National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

Dr Sangma had recently laid the foundation of a Ginger Processing Unit (GPU) at Jengjal and marketing shed and storage facility in West Garo Hills district recently.

'' People have been empowered through NREGS and a transformation of the area is possible if people use their power productively,'' Dr Sangma told the newsmen here.

The GPU was created under Rastriya Sram Vikas Yojana (RSVY) scheme, 2007-08.

The unit would be maintained by Kucholsan SHG Federation of Jengjal with technical guidance from International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Dr Sangma also informed the people that the government had decided to extend the tenure of Area Employment Councils and Village Employment Council secretaries upto three years.

He further said the unit would help the ginger growers of the state, which is one of the largest ginger-producing regions in the country.
