Centre sends more forces to Punjab, Haryana
New Delhi, May 18 (UNI) The Centre has despatched about 50 companies of para-military forces to Punjab and Haryana in view of the heightened tension in some areas of these states following the Dera Sacha Sauda controversy.
Home Ministry sources said a majority of the 5,000 personnel of the Rapid Action Force (RAF), Border Security Force and the Central Reserve Police Force, who have been rushed to the troubled areas since yesterday, were deployed in Punjab, which reported more violent incidents.
"We have sent about 50 companies as this was assessed to be the requirement," sources said, adding that there was no plan to send more forces.
Security in Delhi was also stepped up to tackle any possible spill over of the disturbances from the neighbouring states.
Sources said Punjab and Haryana governments have been asked to use the central forces in areas which witnessed tension and also in areas where tension might arise. "They will be used mostly for staging flag marches and for area demonstration." The two states were asked to keep a close watch on anti-social elements with a past record of disturbing peace and tranquility.
The Ministry had issued advisories to those states where the Dera Sacha Sauda controvery could spread.
In another advisory, Punjab and Haryana were asked to initiate dialogue with different sects to normalise the situation.
