Asom government to observe Anti-Terrorism Day

Guwahati, May 18 (UNI) Concerned at the growing insurgency, the Asom government has decided to observe ''Anti-Terrorism Day'' on May 21.

Official sources said the day would be observed by holding public meetings, debates, seminars and cultural programmes to create awareness against terrorism and violence.

The DCs and SDO(C)s had been instructed to organise programmes in their respective states.

Meanwhile, the trouble-torn Tinsukia district was slowly limping back to normal with the administration relaxing curfew in the daytime in Doomdooma and its adjoining areas.

Ethnic violence, which erupted during a protest over the killing of an ''innocent'' person by the Army at Rupai, seven km from Doomdooma town on May 13, has led to six deaths.

One of the victims was yet to be identified.

P K Bora said that the administration had distributed cheques of Rs three lakh to the family of the victims.

The Tinsukia district administration was undertaking relief operation on war-footing, distributing rice, pulse, salt and other essentials in the affected areas.

Altogether 15 people, injured in the clashes, were undergoing treatment in the Tinsukia Civil Hospital, while one was referred to the Asom Medical College and Hospital today.

Police today arrested five picketers of the All Adivashi Students' Association (AASA) at Rupai Siding on charges of damaging vehicles to enforce a Tinsukia district bandh, called by the organisation.

On the other hand, an umbrella body of three political parties - AGP(P), CPI(ML) and CPI - had organised a mass convention at Tinsukia on June six to dwell on the situation in upper Asom and register their protest against the unabated killing of innocent people.
