Nagpur, may 17 (UNI) In the first instance of a woman being targetted by Naxals, a 40-year-old woman was shot dead by Naxals in Purada police station jurisdiction in Gadchiroli district, police said.

The naxal suspected her to be a police informer, a release issued by the district police said.

Samsubai Uike, who worked in fields for tendu patta collection, had come to her brother's residence in Gadchiroli, seven days back, with her 15-year-old son, Pramod.

On Wednesday night, a group of 14 naxals, including four women came to the house and dragged her out on the street. She was severely beaten with wooden sticks, before being shot dead in cold blood.

This is the first case of a woman being killed by naxals, the release claimed.

Police recovered handbills condemning the arrest of Murli, the top-most naxal leader, by the Nagpur police recently. The killing of the woman, was in retaliation to his arrest, the release further adds.

Police have registered an offence and are investigating the matter. Additional SP, Gadchiroli Anant Rokde has sent police parties to the area to get further details of the incident.
