Thomson Corp to open new scientific centre in Chennai

Chennai, May 17 (UNI) The Thomson Corporation, one of the leading information services company in the world, today announced plans to expand its operations in India by opening Thomson Scientific Centre in the city and expanding its footprint in Hyderabad.

Editorial operations Senior Vice-President Stephen Quinn told newspersons here that the new centre would combine authoritative information with innovative technologies to enhance customers' ability for better results. The centre would provide the research and business communities cutting-edge life sciences information from patents, scientific journals and conferences, he added.

He said the centre, its third major one in India, would complement India operations by providing information-based solutions with technologies that assist discovery, analysis, product development and distribution.

Mr Quinn said they planned to hire a mix of experienced professionals, PhDs, scientific researchers as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students from leading educational institutions with relevant skills for both the centres. The company expected to hire approximately 500 employees for the editorial group over the next three months, he added.

To a question, he said that since 1994, they had expanded the headcount and scope of services provided locally, and now had an employee strength of more than 2,200 in Bangalore and over 150 in Hyderabad.

Company Strategy and Implementation Vicepresident Viji Krishnan said Chennai employees would become key partners in their business, and through the company's globally recognised training, learning and development programes, would have access to exciting career advancement options and unique global opportunities.
