New Delhi, May 17 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha today plunged into turmoil when a Trinamool Congress MP demanded scrapping of 'obsolete, retrograde, British land laws with retrospective effect to save the farmers of the country from resorting to violence or suicides to save themselves from the greedy industrialists and governments.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Mr Dinesh Trivedi said the Land Act passed in 1894 should be scapped lock, stock and barrel to save the entire country from burning like Singur and Nandigram.

Parliament which had passed the Bills with retrospective effect to benefit handful of politicians should repeal this legislation in the interest of crores of farmers of the country.

When he took the names of Singur, Nandigram and Tatas, there were protests from CPI-M members and the Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan advised the member not to enter into controversial territories.

When the trouble got intense, the Chair said Mr Trivedi was allowed two minutes time to speak about scrapping of the act and it was time to get into official business.

The Collection of Statistics Bill 2007 was introduced in the House amidst confusion and also the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Amendment Bill 2007.
