Jaipur, May 17 (UNI) Rajasthan has exceeded the target of wheat procurement during the current season procuring over 2.36 lakh Metric Tonnes (MTs) till May 16, against the target of 2 lakh MTs.

Additional Commissioner(Food and Civil Supply) Sarita Singh told UNI here today that initiatives taken by the state government and the Centre, which included announcement of bonus of Rs 100 per quintal, had paid dividends and boosted the process of procurement which was opened at an alarmingly slow pace.

She said the total procurement is expected to touch 2.5 lakh MTs mark. The procurement process presently is to be continued till May 31, but if required the same would be extended further.

Last year, the procurement was very dissapointing as only 1554 rpt 1554 metric tonnes of wheat was procured against the target of two lakh metric tonnes.

In view of the last year's poor performance the Centre had warned the state government last month that it would not be in a position to ensure supply of wheat for distribution through public distribution system (PDS) if the current season's procurement targets were not realised.
