More open jails needed to reform convicts: CM

Kannur, May 17 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today stressed the need for more open jails in the state to reform convicts.

Inaugurating the second open jail in the state at Chimeni in Kasaragod district, he said steps would be taken to protect the human rights of prisoners.

The Chief Minister said steps were being taken for the pay revision of jail staff.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan presided over the function.

The open jail had an area of 308.75 acres.

Mr Achuthanandan also inaugurated a water supply scheme for the Ezhimala Naval Academy at Ezhimala here.

He said as many as 78 water supply schemes had been commissioned during the last one year.
