Law Ministry to iron out differences on state funding of polls
New Delhi, May 17 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today authorised the Law Ministry to hold discussions with political parties and state governments to iron out differences on state funding of elections.
''The matter has been referred to the Law Ministry as some states were against sharing of expenditure and wanted it to be borne entirely by the Centre,'' Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.
''The Law Ministry had been asked once again to hold discussions with the political parties and state governments to arrive at a consensus.'' The Election Commission had recommended to the Centre to consider state funding of elections.
