New Delhi May 17: The Supreme Court today referred the OBC reservation case to a larger bench.

The bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and Lokeshwar Singh Panta, held that the petition challenging the government notification providing 27 per cent reservation to OBC in admission to centrally run educational institutions of higher studies have raised several important legal issues, which deserve consideration by a larger bench.

With today's order, the hope of OBC candidates aspiring to get admission to IIMs, IITs and post graduate medical science courses during the current academic session, have virtually been dashed as the Supreme Court has already stayed the operation of the impunged government notification for one year, directing the government to come out with authentic caste based data of the country's population.

The court also directed the batch of petitions to be placed before Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan for constituting an appropriate bench.
