Kalam calls for extensive research on mental retardation

Kolkata, May 17 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today urged the neuroscientists to study and find out the causes of mental retardation to help people live without trauma.

Addressing the mentally challenged students at Manovikas Bio-Medical Research &Diagnostic Centre here, Dr Kalam said he did not know why this disorder affects a child adding this might be '' God willing''.

He said he along with a team of students has worked on the causes and found there were many types of genetic disorders that might causes mental retardation.

Describing the crippling condition as the world's greatest challenge, Dr Kalam noted that a worldwide teleconference was held in Washington to find ways to combat this disorder.

The President demanded extensive stem cell research to determine neuro activity of the human brain to single out the causes of retardation.
