Jammu Tawi hits jeep, six dead
Jalandhar, May 17 (UNI) Six people were crushed to death this afternoon when their jeep was hit and dragged by a speeding train at Biaspind under Adampur police station in this district, police said.
According to Adampur SHO, Jagbir Singh Randhawa, the accident occurred about 1430 hrs when the Jammu Tawi-Amedabad express rammed into the jeep on the tracks at an unmanned railway crossing and dragged the vehicle to about 30 metres.
All the occupants of the jeep, on way to Delhi airport to see-off a relative, died on the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Jagtar Singh, Panchyat Secretary Mustafapur village, Rajinder Singh of village Nadala in Kapurthala district, Suchcha Singh and Balbir Singh of Jalandhar district, and two brothers from Amrirtsar, Prabhjot and Gurpreet Singh.
Adampur SDM Bhupinder Singh and DSP (Rural) Kulwant Singh and ADC S S Marad, Jalandhar, who reached the spot, said the bodies extricated from the mangled vehicle, will be handed over to the relatives after post mortem.
The GRP was invesatigating the matter, they said.
Railway traffic on the route was restored soon after the vehicle and the bodies were removed from near the track, they said.
