Shillong, May 17 (UNI) Te Income Tax Employees Federation (ITEF), North East circle, today threatened of launching an agitation if the Congress-led UPA government did not withdraw the new contributory pension scheme for the Central government employees.

The Federation renewed their opposition during the three-day 26th biennial conference of ITEF, which concluded here yesterday.

The new pension scheme, introduced by the Union Government, was opposed by various trade unions in the country, citing that the scheme was detrimental to the interests of the employees.

Demanding the government to withdraw its new proposal of providing the service through health cards, the ITEF urged the government to improve the infrastructure and benefits of the existing scheme to discharge its responsibility towards the government employees and their families.

On the insurgency problem in Northeastern states, the Federation said the government should not view the insurgency problem merely as a law and order problem, but to take constructive initiatives to arrive at an amicable settlement to the satisfaction of all sections.

On the unemployment problem, the Federation said, '' Unemployment is one of the chronic problems of this region for the past few decades. '' They also urged all the concerned to set up job-generating projects to solve the problem for ever.

The ITEF asked business houses of national and international repute to come to this region for setting up industrial houses for the overall development of the region.
