India taking steps to meet climatic changes: A Raja
New Delhi, May 17 (UNI) Union Minister for Environment and Forest A Raja today sought to dispel the impression prevailing in some countries that India was not concerned about the emission level that caused global warming as it was not signatory to the Kyoto Proposal.
The stigma attached to India in this regard was totally wrong, he said replying to a discussion on global warming in the Lok Sabha.
Stating that emission was a global phenomenon, Mr Raja said India was proud that emission level in the country stood at only 4 per cent of the global emission as against 8 per cent in Germany, 9 per cent in the U K, US and Canada and 10 per cent in Japan.
''India is very safe as our emission level is within limits,'' he added.
Mr Raja said India had been emphasising on accelerated growth with sustainable development. Though India was not a signatory to the Kyoto proposal, it had been taking steps to reduce the emission level. The Kyoto proposal provided that all developed nations should reduce emissions.
He pointed out that in order to reduce pollution, India had switched over to hydro themal power. The primary concern of the country should be energy sector reform. "We are taking all measures to meet the climatic changes.'' UNI YS PK KP1556
