Gun powder factory explosion toll in Uttarakhand reaches 5

Dehra Dun, May 17 (UNI) Five workers, out of 10, died in a blast at a gun powder factory here this morning.

While three workers were killed on the spot, six of them were injured and had been admitted to the Doon hospital here. Three were quite serious and two were stated to be critical, according to the sources.

Dehra Dun District Magistrate Dr Rakesh Kumar confirmed their deaths and said that Thaman Bahadur and Tek Bahadur were being taken to Delhi for treatment, when they succumbed to 100 per cent burn injuries they had sustained, on the way, increasing the toll to 5.

Manjeet Singh Negi had suffered 40 per cent injuries.

Ten workers were inside the factory, near Shivlok Colony in Raipur, when the blast took place at around 0720 hrs, sources said, adding that about 150 kg of gun powder was stored in the factory.

The other three deceased have been indentified as Gam Bahadur, Ravi Prasad and Mohan Lal Sharma.

Other workers of the factory said had the blast taken place after 0800 hrs, the toll would have been devastating as 70 to 80 people work daily in the factory.

Meanwhile, manager of the factory has been arrested, police said.

Secretary of Shivalik Vikas Manch, Shivlok Colony, M S Kalsi said the blast was so strong that the windowpanes of several buildings were cracked.
