New Delhi, May 17: The Government today assured the Rajya Sabha that it was committed to take appropriate steps according top priority to deal with the Justice Rajender Sachar Committee report on status of Muslims in the country.

Making a statement on an issue raised by Mr Shahid Siddiqui, Samajwadi Party, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachauri said the high level Justice Sachar Panel had submitted its report to the Government in November 2006 and the Government's intention to help the community was clear from all aspects -- socially, educationally and economically.

Since the Committee was not set up under Commission of Inquiries Act, Parliamentary Procedures did not provide for tabling the status report in Parliament.

Raising the issue, Mr Siddiqui said that if India had to emerge as a super economic power, it could not afford to keep one section backward all the times. Any responsible society should remove the backwardness of the community and take them to path of development.

Successive governments did not attempt it for six decades and even this government was offering mere lip sympathies without taking any concrete steps.

Mrs Sushma Swaraj, BJP, supporting the discussion of the report in the House suggested that the Parliament sittings should not be curtailed before May 22, the prescribed schedule for the ongoing session.
